After working on it for a few weeks I realized there was no way I'd be able to come close to finishing it on time, so I put it down to work on other projects. After a few months of sporadic work on it, I made a major push to finish it during Feb.-April 2016; doing about 80-85% of the work on it during this period (and largely forsaking most of my other hobbies at the time). With it mostly done, I decided to shelve it for AWA Pro 2016 and came back to it, tweaking the effects, during Aug./Sept. 2016. All in all, I probably spent a few hundred hours on this.
